Parish ReadThis summer we encourage everyone to read The Great Emergence: How Christianity is Changing and Why. We will come together as a parish to discuss the book on Wednesday, August 4 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. or Sunday, August 15 from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. The Great Emergence was named one of the top 10 books in Religion & Spirituality for 2009 by Booklist, a publication of the American Library Association.
Rooted in the observation that massive transitions in the church happen about every 500 years, Phyllis Tickle shows readers that we live in such a time right now. She compares the Great Emergence to other "Greats" in the history of Christianity, including the Great Transformation (when God walked among us), the time of Gregory the Great, the Great Schism, and the Great Reformation. Combining history, a look at the causes of social upheaval, and current events, The Great Emergence shows readers what the Great Emergence in church and culture is, how it came to be, and where it is going. Anyone who is interested in the future of the church in America, no matter what their personal affiliation, will find this book a fascinating exploration.
Contact Leslie Choplin, lchoplin@stpauls-episcopal.org or 545-5418, by Sunday, June 6 to order your copy. Cost is $18 per book.
On break for the summer. Education for Ministry is a program administered and published by the University of the Southat Sewanee. EFM offers lay people the opportunity to increase their knowledge of the Christian tradition and its development. Through study, theological reflection, and worship, participants enrich their own lives and ministry. Participation takes place in a seminar format of 6 - 12 people with a trained facilitator. The entire program runs for four years, but participants are only required to commit to one year at a time. Course materials for the four years cover The Old Testament, The New Testament, Church History, and Theological Choices.
