Live From Around the World

A Day at FIsherman’s Wharf and an encounter with a friend on the street

July 21, 2011, San Francisco

This post will be from as many of us as we can add. I will start (debbie) while I wait for the spaghetti to be cooked and the peanut butter sandwiches to be made for the kids to give to people on the street. Here is Henry to begin our blog for the day. And what a day we had!

Henry: We started the day with  a trolley ride to Fisherman's Wharf. The original plan was that we were only going to stay there until one, but we had a change in plans and got to stay there all day. We ate lunch at a bakery that served soup, pizza, and sandwhiches. After lunch, we went to the Ghiradeli chocolate factory where there was chocolate and ice cream. Outside of the factory we saw Asian pagent queens. After we left the factory we went to Pier 39. There were a lot of shops an a carousel that some of us rode on. There was a farmers market that had a bunch of wierd fruit that we don't have in Virginia. We then went into a shop that had two floors full of hats and jerseys. We then hopped on a trolley and bought Harry Potter tickets for tomorrow.

Genny:  On the way back to the hostel, we were singing and laughing as usual and then out of the blue, we spotted a head of red black hair. We realized right away that it was our old friend Vaughjarya! He was the friend we met on the bus after my little incident with the Asian woman who I was attempting to be nice to. Anyway, today we saw him and rushed up to him shouting his name excitedly. He immediately recognized us, after all, we did have our bright colors on and looked happy, which according to him signifies a tourist. He was as happy to see us as we were to see him, and even said that he had been thinking about us this morning. He said that he now likes St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Facebook and wants to come to our church some time! We exchanged all of our information, took a group pic, and had a parting group sing along. It was epic, quite frankly. It's funny, because we met him right after Father River Sims told us that we should branch out to San Franciscians and talk to them. I guess it was an act of God that we made a friend, and even more amazing that she was Christian, since River told us that only 7% of all Californians practice any religion. So we have a new friend in Christ now!!

Jonathan:

We started out the day today sitting in a long long long long (imagine a lot more "long's") wait in a line for the trolley car.  We took a pleasant ride up towards Fishermans Wharf.  When we got to Fisherman's Wharf, we walked around some and went into a bread store called "Boudin" we ate lunch and then decided to go to Ghiradelli's Chocolate factory and got ice cream and took pictures of random people around us.  We then went to Pier 39 to see the sealions.  We then sat in another long long long wait in line for another trolley car where a street singer said happy birthday to Emily who was very embarassed and went back to the hostel, which I had  never been more happy too see!

thanks all for sharing on the group posts.  I can just see you all “singing and laughing as usual” and this makes me so happy!  Safe travels home!

What wonderful, inspiring, fun and clearly humorous memories you will have of your urban adventure.  That’s a lot to pack in and so much fun to read about.  I’m so glad to hear that the sea lions are still alive and well at Fisherman’s Wharf. The diversity of the culture sounds so enriching… Asian pageant queens. Probably most unexpected was an encounter with a newly found friend.  You truly are adventurers as you explore San Francisco and its many facets.  Carry on.

You are creating memories. Stops alongside life’s journey to mark your paths. The images are those of new sight, new colors, new and exciting worlds, that will grow old and take on new meanings along the journey. May your experiences enrich you as much as they do those of us who read about them. Joy to you all.

Reading all of your narratives is like going on a mini Urban Adventure myself!  Anna has been to San Francisco when she was a J2A youth, of course, but I never have.  The trip forever changed and enriched her perspective on life, and I imagine it will do the same for all of you.  Thank all of you—youth and adults—for representing us in the greater community.  Have a delightful and memorable remainder of your Adventure, and a safe return home to Richmond.  Many of us look forward to hearing about and seeing photos from, your trip!  P.S.  With 102 degree weather (heat index 120) here today, you are in San Francisco at the perfect time!
