Traveling Light

July 14, 2011, San Francisco

As we begin to pack our bags for our San Francisco Urban Adventure I think of my grandma who went to be with our Lord this week. She was never one to pack light. I always joked that even her purse was a suitcase. I'll never understand why she carried so much make-up, she was so beautiful inside and out.

One thing my Grandma didn't carry was emotional and spiritual baggage in her later years. Even when times were tough and she was going through cancer treatment a few years ago, she took everything with great humor and a positive attitude. I read a book a few years ago by Max Lucado that broke down the 23rd Psalm. It gave me a new appreciation and perspective on a passage that is most often read at funerals. Come to find out, this was my Grandma's favorite scripture. Max Lucado's book, Traveling Light, talks about how this scripture can help us travel light on our journey by setting down our baggage and giving our burdens to God through all times and allowing him to bless us.

It has been a difficult year for many in our group. We have suffered losses of friends and family, and even our youth minister's absense has left a void. What we are about to do, see, and encounter is very important. To have the opportunity to take time out to be present, a blessing and perhaps make a difference in someone's life is what I believe life is really all about. To love each other. I want to encourage everyone to remember this scripture as we travel. I have changed it up a little for our group:

The LORD is our shepherd;
We shall not want.

2 He makes us to lie down in green pastures;
He leads us beside the still waters. (and hopefully the Pacific Ocean!)

3 He restores our soul;
He leads us in the paths of righteousness (may we never be lost)
For His name’s sake.

4 Yea, though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
We will fear no evil;
For You are with us;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort us.

5 You prepare a table before us in the presence of our enemies; (or strangers)
You anoint our head with oil;
Our cup runs over. (we have more than we could ever need)

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us
All the days of our life;
And we will dwell in the house of the LORD
Forever.

Maux,  thinking about you and praying for you and your family.  Your words are encouraging and wise. I am grateful that you are one of the leaders for the San Fran group bringing your ever inspiring attitude, faith and fun to our youth.

Traveling light is a message I dearly needed to hear.  Jill and I said this morning that we have much more than is necessary, yet we continue to pack more (books, yarn, food, stuff).  You have much of your grandmother’s spirit; what a blessing to the youth and mentors and those you will meet in SF.  The one thing you can pack on are memories.  May you and the group fill your lives with the spirit of love and joy.

Thanks, Maux, and I, too, am sad about your and your family’s loss of the physical presence of your grandmother.  Obviously, she has left much with you.  How fortunate our youth are to be traveling with you and the other adult mentors to San Francisco, and all of you with them!  May you all travel with safety, mindfulness, and delight.

Just beautiful, Maux. We are so sorry for your loss. Many prayers to you, your grandma, and your family. I can’t wait for Caroline to experience San Fran next week with all of you and to hear the stories when you return. Safe travels!!
