A Punch in the Mouth: A Threat to the Dignity of God’s Children

March 09, 2010

Posted by Wallace+

"Picking a fight" is how Barton Hinkle put it; but the RTD editorial put it even better, "a punch in the mouth."  And, yes, "gratuitous" and "socially revolting."

If you don't already know, the action being described is the Attorney General's letter to Virginia's universities and colleges that they can not include sexual orientation among the classes protected from descrimination.

As one parishioner said to me, it's one thing to stand up to the Westboro gang, when they show up in town, but what about standing up to Virginians and Virginia's elected leaders when their conduct poses a threat to the dignity of God's children?

There's only one good answer to that question.

Richmond Rally at VCU

Rally to Protest the Attorney General's Opinion

At 12 noon on Wednesday, March 10, a student-organized rally to protest Cuccinell's opinion will be held at the VCU Commons Plaza.

We Don't Want Discrimination in Our State Universities and Colleges

More You Can Do

Cross-Posted from Equality Virginia

1) Contact the Governor and let him know that you support policies that protect GLBT Virginians from discrimination and that you expect him to provide leadership in ensuring that Virginia is truly a "Commonwealth of Opportunity" for all Virginians, including GLBT Virginians.

2) If you are an alum, student, faculty or staff member of a Virginia college or university, contact your institution's president and let him or her know that you want your college or university to stand with its GLBT students, faculty, staff and alumni and reject the advice of the Attorney General.

3) Sign Equality Virginia's online petition in favor of changing the law to provide nondiscrimination protection for all.

4) Spread the word on FaceBook, Twitter and other social media sites about the need to take action.

SERMONS

Whom Do We Invite?

Needless to say, this is not Jesus’ take on early Emily Post. He is, yes, present for a meal in this morning’s Gospel reading, but the meal is only the jumping-off point. As is his wont, Jesus takes something from everyday life, something banal, does his parabolic magic, and offers us, not mere etiquette, but food for the soul.

Eightfifteen Sunday

Leslie Choplin was our guest preacher on Sunday, August 22, as part of “Eightfifteen Sunday,” when members of the eightfifteen group for 20- and 30-somethings at St. Paul’s led our 10 a.m. worship service.

The Call to New Life

The way Jesus lived forced a choice upon everyone who met him. Jesus didn’t grab people by their lapels and shout at them to follow Him or else. Instead, he offered himself. He spoke of God. He told the truth. He lived with compassion. He lived with love and he lived with integrity. People saw in Jesus something that caused in them a crisis and they had to choose. For the world to see Jesus today, it must look at us.

“Be Not Afraid”

Fear will remain, but how do we learn to live in such a way that fear does not get the better of us, does not hold us, keep us, back, from doing what God would have us do; that fear would not keep us from really living the lives that God would have us live. And so, in this morning’s gospel passage, we hear Jesus say, “Be not afraid.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

“... if we’ll go back and take a closer look at the parable, there’s something there that we might have missed, something that goes beyond warning to something still more life-giving, something more encouraging than simply a message of warning.”
