What's New with Wallace & St. Paul's

Coming Up on Grace Street

It has come to our attention that those with a Comcast email account may experience delays in receiving St. Paul's messages. Constant Contact is working with Comcast to resolve the situation. In the meantime, we will post a link to the Friday "Coming Up On Grace Street" messages here on the Rector's blog. This link will work for up to three months.

November 27: Coming Up on Grace Street (Web version)

Wallace's Friday Message

My Dear People,

With hopes that your Thanksgiving holiday is both a happy and restorative time, this is just a brief note to say three things. First, once again, Happy Thanksgiving!

Second, I hope you can join us on Sunday, for worship of course, as well as to be with Ray Glover during the adult forum. Ray, a long-time St. Paul's friend, is also one of the most knowledgeable and respected musicians in the Episcopal Church. Ray will offer a teaching on Advent hymnody. It's a real treat to have Ray with us.

Lastly, whether or not you were present in church last Sunday, I would encourage you to read and reflect on both the sermon and the Such Great Heights report. Having spent the fall faithfully working our way through Such Great Heights, let us all be praying for the graces we need to live into the vision that the Spirit has called forth in us; and let us also be praying that God guide each one of us in knowing our part in fulfilling that vision. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done!

With thanks, with joy, and in faith,
your brother in Christ,

Wallace+

St. Paul's News & Notes

  1. Wednesday Nights: The Music of Advent with Ellen Johnston
Join Ellen Johnston, wife of Bishop Shannon Johnston, for two Wednesday night sessions  on the music of Advent. Using the hymns of Advent, Ellen will lead an exploration of Advent's larger themes - to the end of time, and a vision of humanity restored and creation renewed. Program begins at 7 p.m. Beforehand, join us in the Chapel at 5 p.m. to see why Richmond Magazine just named Prayer Yoga at St. Paul's one of "75 Things Every Richmonder Should Do."

  2. LayersFirst Fridays Art Exhibit & Reception
Art lovers, mark your calendar for Friday, Dec. 4, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Artist and art educator, Kristin Polich, will host a reception and present her exhibit "Layers," a mixed media show including collage, drawing, painting and encaustic that explores reconstruction and healing through the process of art making.

SERMONS

Easter Sunday: The Rev. D. Wallace Adams-Riley

We come into the world, seeking relationship, and, seeking understanding.

LENT 2B

EPIPHANY 2B

To Bethlehem; to Bethlehem, we have come.

And, of course, this Christmas, tonight, and tomorrow, new memories are being made; a Carol sung, pure and exquisite; an old friend; warm, endearing words exchanged; a first Christmas for a new grandbaby; a candle lit, a face aglow, eyes agleam.

The Pointer’s Point

More than fifty times, in his published writings, Barth refers to the Grunewald image; and, indeed, usually, it is precisely in reference to John,  and John’s relation to the figure of Christ; as he points.
Barth (and Grunewald before him) understood John’s sole purpose to be to serve as a pointer to Christ, a reference to Christ, a witness to Christ.
