Jesus & Social Justice (Jesus & Beck, Part III)

March 22, 2010

Posted by Wallace+

Of all the commentary and excitement following Glenn Beck's assertion that social justice is not Christian but, instead, communist, Nazi, etc., the line that will stay with me longest came in an interview on the Colbert Report last week. Colbert was interviewing a Roman Catholic priest who, in turn, quoted the late Archbishop Camara of Brazil. Archbishop Camara, a champion of the poor, who was called "the Red Bishop" by his detractors, said, "I feed the poor, I'm called a saint. I ask why the poor have no food, I'm called a communist."

In all seriousness, to stand with and for the poor is to do what Jesus did, and it is to follow his teaching.

As Jesus said, "As you have done unto the least of these, so you have done unto me."

SERMONS

Easter Sunday: The Rev. D. Wallace Adams-Riley

We come into the world, seeking relationship, and, seeking understanding.

LENT 2B

EPIPHANY 2B

To Bethlehem; to Bethlehem, we have come.

And, of course, this Christmas, tonight, and tomorrow, new memories are being made; a Carol sung, pure and exquisite; an old friend; warm, endearing words exchanged; a first Christmas for a new grandbaby; a candle lit, a face aglow, eyes agleam.

The Pointer’s Point

More than fifty times, in his published writings, Barth refers to the Grunewald image; and, indeed, usually, it is precisely in reference to John,  and John’s relation to the figure of Christ; as he points.
Barth (and Grunewald before him) understood John’s sole purpose to be to serve as a pointer to Christ, a reference to Christ, a witness to Christ.
