Life and Death
Posted by Kimberly Allen
In last week's Word from Grace Street,
Wallace+ wrote about the execution of John Allen Muhammad, who was put
to death on Tuesday, November 10. Wallace+ reminded us that on that
night, "by virtue of our being Americans and Virginians... we
participated in putting a man to death." He went on to challenge us to
consider the meaning of that fact:
That we would seek and serve Christ in those who were victimized between October 2 and October 22, 2002, by Malvo and Muhammad, that is a given. But what about the Christ in John Allen Muhammad?
What happened to that Christ last night?
Including John Allen Muhammad's execution, as Virginians we have participated in the deaths of 104 individuals since 1976. Together with Texans, we are responsible for nearly half of all executions in the United States since 1976.
This Word from Grace Street prompted a lot of responses, some of which we hope to share with you in the coming days.
