Prayers

March 21, 2011

Members Jean White and Kia Bentley gave the following prayers at the Vestry meeting this March.

Jean White researched, found, and shared this translation of the Lord’s Prayer at the March Vestry meeting.

(FYI, this first one is thought to be an original of the Lord's Prayer we say today.)

The following translation can be found in the Global Library Online at http://www.global.org/Pub/LordsPrayer.asp. It owned, maintained and operated by the Diocese of Texas of the Old Catholic Church.
Jean White offered this translation while at the Vestry meeting in March.

Peshita Syriac-Aramaic translation
O Birther! Father-Mother of the Cosmos, focus your light within us—make it useful. Create your reign of unity now; Your one desire acts with ours, as in all light, so in all forms. Grant what we need each day in bread and insight. Loose the cords of mistakes binding us, as we release the strand we hold of others' guilt. Don't let surface things delude us, but free us from what holds us back. From you is born all ruling will, the power and the life to do, the song that beautifies all; from age to age it renews. Amen.

Kia Bentley, a Vestry member, wrote and offered the following prayers:

Loving and gracious God, thank you for bringing each of us here to this place on this day- in the midst of the rich history, tradition, abundance, and beauty of this church- to congregate and collaborate in love, dedication and service, to share our gifts of perspective and experience, to lift up our individual and corporate commitment to the stewardship of the people and resources of St. Paul's, and seek your continued blessing and direction, as we not only manage and plan what is, but also envision and dream what could be.

Tonight we pray especially for clarity of thought and unanimity of purpose in our deliberations, so that what we do will serve our parish and our wider Diocesan community well. Deepen our understanding of our responsibilities and help us ensure that faith, hope and love are at the center of our conversations, debates and decisions. Deepen our understanding of each other, too, so that- as our reading from Colossians 3 says- compassion, kindness, humility and patience can indeed embody the important work that lies ahead. Amen and amen.

SERMONS

Easter Sunday: The Rev. D. Wallace Adams-Riley

We come into the world, seeking relationship, and, seeking understanding.

LENT 2B

EPIPHANY 2B

To Bethlehem; to Bethlehem, we have come.

And, of course, this Christmas, tonight, and tomorrow, new memories are being made; a Carol sung, pure and exquisite; an old friend; warm, endearing words exchanged; a first Christmas for a new grandbaby; a candle lit, a face aglow, eyes agleam.

The Pointer’s Point

More than fifty times, in his published writings, Barth refers to the Grunewald image; and, indeed, usually, it is precisely in reference to John,  and John’s relation to the figure of Christ; as he points.
Barth (and Grunewald before him) understood John’s sole purpose to be to serve as a pointer to Christ, a reference to Christ, a witness to Christ.
