Remembering Brother Matthew
Posted by Wallace+
Today is the eleventh anniversary of the death of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student and an Episcopalian who was tortured and left for dead near Laramie, Wyoming in 1998.
Matthew was found alive, but in a coma. He died a few days later from his injuries on October 12th. His death brought national attention to hate crime legislation. The Matthew Shepard Act (officially the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act) passed the House the other day and the Senate is now considering the bill.
You might visit the homesite of The Matthew Shepard Foundation, which his parents founded to "replace hate with understanding, compassion and acceptance" through education, advocacy, and simply through continuing to tell Matthew's story.
May God bless Judy and Dennis Shepard in their commitment to justice and compassion; and, in the words of our Baptismal Covenant, may God help us all to respect the dignity of every human being.
