St. Paul’s Calls a Minister of Music

May 21, 2010, People of St. Paul's (41), Church (77)

Headshot: David SindenMy Dear People,

A great and musical day is coming soon!

After a far-ranging, thorough, and prayerful search process, it is my pleasure to announce that St. Paul's Church has extended a call to a new Minister of Music; he has accepted; and he will begin his ministry with us on Sunday, August 1, 2010.

David Sinden is currently serving at Christ Church Cathedral, in Indianapolis, Indiana, as Assistant Organist and Choirmaster, where he has been since 2006. Prior to being at the Cathedral, David served at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Bloomington, Indiana, and at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lakewood, Ohio. He was educated at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music, and at Indiana University in Bloomington where he received his Master of Music.

Among the many strengths that David brings is a sense of joy in music; excellent people skills; openness to musical/liturgical diversity; commitment to community outreach through music; and technical virtuosity and improvisational skill on the organ. (Jim Hall has noted David's "ability to fully exploit the Rosales.") Also, many of our children and parents will be excited to know that David has much experience with and a real passion for children's choirs.

David summarizes his ministry as follows, "I empower people of all ages and abilities to engage their faith through joyful and accomplished music-making. I believe that music and liturgy are partners in congregational transformation, and I strive to help diverse choirs and congregations grow and change through successful music ministry."

Having David Sinden join us at St. Paul's Church will be a day both of celebration and of promise. I know God has abundant blessings in store for us, as David helps us grow and explore yet more fully what it means "to make a joyful noise unto the Lord."

We will also be pleased to welcome David's wife Anne, who is a professional recorder player and teacher.

Finally, a special word of thanks to the Minister of Music Search Committee: Jim Hall (Chair), Carl Benson, Katie Fessler, Mike Kotrady, Sarah McDermott, Suzanne Spooner-Munch, and Will Bigelow. In the words of St. Paul, "Well done, good and faithful servants." And thank you all, the members of St. Paul's Church, for the prayers you have offered.

With thanks to God,
your brother in Christ,

Wallace+

SERMONS

To Bethlehem; to Bethlehem, we have come.

And, of course, this Christmas, tonight, and tomorrow, new memories are being made; a Carol sung, pure and exquisite; an old friend; warm, endearing words exchanged; a first Christmas for a new grandbaby; a candle lit, a face aglow, eyes agleam.

The Pointer’s Point

More than fifty times, in his published writings, Barth refers to the Grunewald image; and, indeed, usually, it is precisely in reference to John,  and John’s relation to the figure of Christ; as he points.
Barth (and Grunewald before him) understood John’s sole purpose to be to serve as a pointer to Christ, a reference to Christ, a witness to Christ.

Keep Alert, Awake, and Watchful

On any given day, there are those things that would get our attention; those things that would bring fresh perspective; those things would remind us of what is most important, what is most true. If, that is, if we but notice. We never know when those things, those experiences, those people might come. And so it has always been, so it has always been.

The Rule of 72

The Rule of 72, they call it.  It’s a rule of thumb to figure how long it’ll take to double your money. If you know you can get 5%, on your investment, then you divide 5 into 72 and that tells you: it’ll take roughly 14 and ½ years to double your money. That’s the Rule of 72. Now, sometimes an investor doesn’t want to wait 14 and a ½ years, or however long the Rule of 72 tells you that you have to wait and so increased risks are taken. And sometimes you win, and sometimes you loose.

Walk the Way of a Servant

We all want, in the words of St. Paul, to “lead a life worthy of God.” A life worthy of God. Un-like the lives of the false prophets, of Micah’s day, or the false teachers of Jesus’ day, the scribes and the Pharisees, teachers of the law. Their lives are un-worthy of God, we are told, in no uncertain terms. In their hypocrisy, they serve, not God, not God’s people, but themselves.
