Tackling Adversity, One Day at a Time
When encountering a great deal of adversity, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. A real-life illustration of that is in a recent Fifty Plus article, focusing on one of our own parishioners, Chris Thompkins.
As you will recall, after a bad bicycling accident two years, Chris became a quadriplegic. Upon hearing about this accident, a small group of men called the Second Half, inquired about how they could help him. Since then for five days a week, the group has given Chris exercises so that he can regain greater use of his limbs.
The group is dedicated to developing a deeper commitment to their faith and to establishing substantive relationships with each other. Members (many are retired) are involved in several congregations and denominations.
In addition to the physical therapy, they talk and reflect with Chris about many subjects, inspiring him to persevere. Simultaneously, Chris serves as an inspiration to his fellow members, as he is never all about himself, but instead puts others’ well-being first, according to the group’s founder, Dr. Gordon Prior.
