Lenten Lunches

Men and women from St. Paul’s (and many other local churches) come together during Lent to prepare and serve lunches to the community before and after the weekday Lenten services. This community effort involves over 350 volunteers from 50 different churches in the Richmond metropolitan area. It is the major fundraising event of the ECW with all profits going to charities, primarily those benefiting women and children in the Richmond area. The Lenten Lunch Program is coordinated by the ECW (Episcopal Church Women) of St. Paul's.
100% of the profits ($25,000 in 2007) from the Lenten Lunch Program are distributed through grant requests. Grants are made to groups locally, statewide, nationally and internationally. Examples of grant recipients are Boaz and Ruth (a Richmond based group that does reentry job training for recently released prisoners), Boys' Home-Covington, VA, ERD (Episcopal Relief and Development) for Gulf Coast relief, and Midwives for Haiti.
Planning for this project is ongoing throughout the year with a new chairperson selected each year.
