Economy & Growth

Over the past 25 years, the population of the Richmond region grew almost 100%, all in the surrounding counties.  This year, the City's population grew after many years of decline. Today the region has 1,100,000 people-65% European-American, 30% African-American, and 5% other-and we are beginning to enjoy greater cultural diversity.

But, with poverty concentrated in the center City and growth taking place in our counties, political power has shifted.  Regional cooperation, which is necessary to address our most pressing issues, is strained.

Thankfully, our Region's economic base is strong.   We support a diversified economy, enjoy low unemployment, and host the headquarters of thirteen Fortune 1000 companies.

The Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce promotes our region by publishing favorable comparisons to Birmingham, AL; Charlotte, NC; Jacksonville, FL; Louisville, KY; Nashville, TN; and Raleigh, NC.  Access its report at http://www.grcc.com/files/2007_Competitive_Analysis_Report_Oct07_Final.pdf

We pray for a spirit of community among our business and political leaders,
so that fear is overcome, divisions healed and community restored.
