Join us today at 5:00 for the first SGH-Chistian Formation meeting at church!  Hosted by Mary Kay Huss and Sarah McDermott.  This is just the beginning…let us know what you want to see at St. Paul’s in Christian Formation for all ages!

Jean has some good points, and I would like to comment on “strengthening the content” of our classes.  She and I both learned in college, I earlier than she, the history of the writing and compilation of our Bible.  For me, that was over forty years ago, and the scholarship was not new then.  I feel that it is almost a scandal that the people of St. Paul’s have not been given the opportunity to learn about this fascinating history of the writings that we hold dear to our hearts. So I would like to vote for classes in textual history and criticism for parishioners of all ages.

I think we have 3 separate but related issues regarding our Christian formation:  1) Content; 2) Structure; 3) Timing.  With 3 worship services and an education hour, Sunday mornings feel rushed with little to no time for visiting and catching up with our church family.  Can we “open up” Sunday mornings a bit?  There are several possibilities that occur to me (and, I’m sure, there are others):  1) Structure Sunday mornings so that one Sunday a month has no education hour but a social hour designed to entice folks to come early or stay late for the opportunity to participate 2) Move the education hour to an evening 3) Have 2 Sunday morning worship services to create more space in the morning schedule.

Also, we have tried having choices for Christian formation - lecture format with Q&A and various small group options.  I think this is the ideal but we need to do what we can to insure an adequate attendance at the lecture where the speaker has invested a great deal of time in preparation.  The main issues, I believe, are timing and, most importantly, content.  There has always been a large group of parishoners who want to be intellectually and theologically challenged.  This is part of St. Paul’s DNA and one thing we are known for.  Let’s strengthen the content of our Christian formation classes

Well, let me get started by saying I wish that Christian Formation was something that everyone, kids and adults alike, looked forward to each week.  I’d like the adults to have the community of close faith and caring that the YAC group has!  I think that small group learning is a place to start!
