Posted by Adrian Luxmoore, Worship Team Co-Chair
And below are notes from our most recent meeting! Thanks to all who contributed.
Meeting opened with a reflection - Bryan Appel
Forum Speaker
-- Worship forum will be October 4 with Reverend Dr. Ian Markham. Topics that will be suggested to him include:
- How liturgy feeds life (perhaps a topic for sermon)
- How to listen to what God wants in worship.
- How to make a transition in worship
- Suzanne agreed to coordinate the sale of Markham's books.
- Wallace will make contact with Markham to discuss.
Meeting Schedule
- The meeting scheduled for November 4 will concentrate on the worship space and will probably be held in the church.
Vision of a fourth weekend service:
- The main topic for the meeting was to create an outline vision of a possible fourth week end service.
- Who is it for? People we are most interested in attracting are:
- Those living downtown
- Young adults (20's and 30's)
- Unchurched
- Seekers
- Inactive members
- We are NOT trying to attract existing members
When
- Friday or Saturday evening most likely.
- Midweek not likely to be preferred
- Sunday evening may interfere with current activities
- 6:00 to 7:00 most likely - early enough to allow for other evening activities but after work.
What
- Some version of Vespers/Evening Prayer/Compline
- Eucharist on occasion (e.g. monthly)
- Gathering with hospitality after the service
- Rotate the form in a regular and predictable fashion
- Include some kind of reflection on scripture - homily/reflection by leader/congregant, sharing by participants
- "Do it Yourself" environment with participants being actively involved in planning and leadership
Where
- Start in a space that encourages intimacy and does not overwhelm the participants.
- Atrium is one possibility
- Gathering afterwards should be close to the worship space to encourage transition.
- As we grow look at moving service to alternate locations
Music
- Gospel, Taizé, Jazz, Blue Grass, Caribbean, World and old time were all mentioned.
- Probably mix or rotate them.
- Rotation should be in a regular/predictable fashion.
- Look at feasibility of coordinating with visiting groups
- Participatory - consider screen with words.
Resources
- Committed work team. Vision is for this group to create a nurturing and supportive environment as they work on implementation of the service.
- Musicians
- Clergy
- Plan
- Recruit/find a few people who are willing to be committed.
- If possible from surrounding area as well as from current membership
- Phase in by having the service once or twice a month to start.
Next Meeting
- "What is our global vision of Sunday mornings?"
Wednesday September 23 - 5:00 p.m. in the Norwood Room.
Wallace closed the meeting with a prayer.
