Lenten Preaching Series
Speaking for Justice

The theme for our preaching series in 2009 is from Isaiah 6:8:

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, Here am I. Send me!"

Our speaker line-up this year features a number of exciting faces, each with a passion for social justice issues and changing our world for the better.  They challenge us to discern how we might answer Jesus' calls forpeace, justice, love, honesty, and compassion. For in times ofhardship, the Lord has asked: "Whom shall I send?"

Preaching Schedule

Preaching begins at 12:30 pm in the Church.

Click on the names below to read more about each preacher. Audio of each speaker's first sermon will be made available online. CDs are made of each sermon. One CD with one sermon is $5. To order, call St. Paul's at 643-3589.

"Lent is usually a time for giving something up… but this year St. Paul’s is challenging us to take something on. And the thing they are challenging us to take on is justice."

Mar. 3 – 6 (Tuesday - Friday)

The Rev. Dr. John W. Kinney (Dean, Virginia Union School of Theology)

Video: Do You Know What Time It Is?... It's Time to Clean Up

The Rev. Dr. Kinney asks: Do you know what time it is? The answer: It's time to clean up. It's time to stand up and make a difference in our Richmond community.  Click here for a list of volunteer opportunities.

Mar. 10 – 13 (Tuesday - Friday)
The Rev. Canon Carmen Guerrero (Canon for Peace & Justice, Diocese of Ariz.)

Audio: Canon Guerrero's sermon on March 10, 2009

During ministry in Honduras, Canon Guerrero found herself wrestling with her answer to the call to serve. She had been sent to a community that, soon after her arrival, was attacked by military forces. On her second day, she saw men with machetes prepared for battle should the military return. “All I could think," she preached, "was when I said I would come, it certainly was not to come and die. So, for a split second, there was a battle going on in my mind and in my heart. If I stay, I might get killed. On the other hand, if I leave, what am I saying about the power of God and God’s ability to provide? So I decided to stay."

Video Excerpt: Mrs. Rutledge's sermon on March 24, 2009

"Do you know someone who feels hopeless? Are you wondering about someone who has no faith? Is there someone dead whose presence you desperately miss? The God who is powerful to call into existence the things that do not exist yet is also powerful to create hope where there is no hope; faith where there is no faith; justice where there is no justice; and life where there is no life."

Mar. 31 - Apr. 3 (Tuesday - Friday)
The Rt. Rev. Sean W. Rowe (Bishop, Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania)

"When we look into the face of injustice, of grinding poverty, of the absence of basic human rights, we do not despair, but speak and engage the hope of the Kingdom of God because, brothers and sisters, we are agents of transformation... We are a people called to use the Kingdom imagination to envision a world where God's justice does reign and to work for that world." -- Bishop Rowe, Mar. 31

Apr. 6 - 8 (Monday - Wednesday, Holy Week)
The Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee (Bishop, Diocese of Virginia)

“The absence of faith that commands attention to the public good has consequences that we see all around us. Every few days it seems a new scandal is uncovered in the volatile financial markets of the world: insider trading by securities brokers; manipulation of markets for short-term gain rather than investment for long-time productivity. These are more than economic issues; they are moral ones.” - Bishop Lee, Apr. 6
