The Rt. Rev. Shannon Johnston
Shannon Sherwood Johnston was elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Virginia on January 26, 2007 and was consecrated at the Washington National Cathedral on May 26, 2007. He will become the 13th diocesan Bishop of Virginia.
A native of Florence, Alabama, Bishop Johnston was born on October 20, 1958. He graduated from The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee in 1981 (having been elected to Phi Beta Kappa) with degrees in Philosophy and Music. After working in developmental programming for young adults and youth, he entered Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois in 1985. These studies included two terms at Westcott House Theological College at Cambridge University in England, where he engaged in independent research as well as following the regular course work. He received the M.Div. from Seabury-Western in 1988, graduating first in his class.
Bishop Johnston was ordained to the diaconate and to the priesthood in the Diocese of Alabama. He served as Curate at St. Paul’s Church, Selma, Alabama, and in 1990 became Rector of Church of the Advent in Sumner, Mississippi. There he guided the establishment of the Kairos prison ministry at nearby Parchman State Penitentiary, work to which he was intensely committed over the next four years. In 1994, he became Rector of All Saints’ Church in Tupelo, Mississippi, where he served until his election as bishop. During those years, All Saints’ became noted for its profound healing as a congregation and for its remarkable growth, exercising a nationally-recognized program of outreach ministries. Bishop Johnston’s service to the Diocese of Mississippi included two terms on the Standing Committee (President), nine years as a Convocational Dean, the Diocesan Executive Committee (Vice-President), membership on the Commission on the Ministry and the diocesan Theology Committee, and instructor for the School for Deacons. He was a Deputy for the General Conventions of 2000, 2003, and 2006.
Bishop Johnston is newly-elected to the Board of Trustees for the Virginia Theological Seminary. For many years, he has promoted reading, study, and dialogue in classic theology as a key foundational resource for the Church’s present life.
Always maintaining a passion for liturgy and music, Bishop Johnston has served on the faculties of two national conferences for the Leadership Program for Musicians. He has been featured in several roles for the annual Mississippi Conference on Church Music and Liturgy, a national conference directed since1994 by his wife, Ellen Johnston, who is a professional church musician and clinician. They were married in 1995 and now live in Richmond, VA.

St. Paul’s most recent outreach efforts are through the Millennium Development Goals to which St. Paul’s is devoting 0.7% of its annual budget. St. Paul’s focus is on the Carpenter Kids Program in Tanzania, and its own on-site recycling program. In addition, St. Paul’s is funding the research stage of a micro-lending project in a sister St. Paul’s parish in Ghana. The Millennium Development Goals, endorsed by the Episcopal Church are eight interrelated targets for the eradication of global poverty:

Celebrant: Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?
People: I will,with God’s help.
Which parts of your creed/statement of belief are worth advocating for? Which ones would you fight for (non-violently)? How do you live out these truths? Are there things that you want to believe in but are afraid to take hold of because of what it might mean for your life? (e.g. “Go sell all your possessions, give the proceeds to the poor and follow me.") Which truths are too much for you–too scary.
