Eyes on Richmond: The Birthplace of Religious Freedom

Friday lunchtime forum

Mr. Tommy P. Baer, Chair of the First Freedom Center and Past President of B'nai B'rith International, will headline this popular Eyes on Richmond lunchtime forum at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, downtown in Capitol Square. He will speak on "Richmond: The Birthplace of Religious Freedom?" Lunch will be catered by Kuba Kuba.

As chair of the First Freedom Center, Baer works to increase understanding and respect for religious freedom, building on the legacy that began in Richmond with the adoption of Thomas Jefferson's Statute for Religious Freedom by the Virginia General Assembly in 1786. As the international president of B'nai B'rith from 1994-1998 Baer met with the leaders of 35 countries on the issues of Middle East peace, anti-Semitism, terrorism, and other subjects.

Baer has received extensive recognition for his civic service, including awards from the Virginia State Bar, Richmond Bar Association, Richmond Jewish Community Federation, the Virginia General Assembly and the University of Richmond. Baer and his wife Betty live in Richmond.

St. Paul's Eyes on Richmond series is a lunchtime forum that takes place on Fridays, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m., in the St. Paul's Parish House (815 East Grace Street) during the fall. The cost to attend a forum is $8, which includes lunch with beverage and dessert. St. Paul's offers this educational program as a service to the community.

Reservations to attend Eyes on Richmond with Tommy Baer may be made online at www.stpauls-episcopal.org/eyesonrichmond or by calling (804) 643-3589 by Wed., Sept. 30. Free parking is available in the St. Paul's garage (enter on 8th Street between Grace & Franklin Streets) for those attending Eyes on Richmond. Downtowners can take the free GRTC Lunchtime Express shuttle bus between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to the 8th & Broad Street stop.

Artist’s Reception

Meet-the-Artist Event with Jenn Myer

During the month of October, an art exhibit by Jenn Myer is on display in the St. Paul's Parish Hall. You can view her artwork on Sundays and on weekdays when the church is open (8:00 am to 4:00 pm). Jenn is hosting an Artist's Reception on Sunday, October 4, an opportunity for you to meet her and learn more about her work.

Artist's Statement
by Jenn Myer

I consider my self to be a life long student of Art. My teaching, parenting, paintings, collages are all strong components of my portfolio. I think teaching Art is one of the most honorable positions. I like facilitating others with their ideas as it allows me to expand on my own ideas. When many of my students begin, they are obsessed with perfection in their work. They want to quit the project when paint gets dripped on it. I love the imperfections in their work and in my own. I think it is good to see the artist's hand in the work. Art encompasses so many things. It is investigation, design, presentation, and meditation. Since my daughter, Eleanor, was born two and half years ago I have become more disciplined in my practice of Art. For the past few years I have been developing collages based on found materials, and repurposing old paintings. I still enjoy painting from a still life. I often start out really focused on the object or idea and then I allow my mind to wander and develop patterns and colors that are not really there.

Education for Ministry

A Christian education offering.

Meeting of the Education for Ministry group. For more information, contact Adrian Luxmoore at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 264-3502.

About EfM

Every baptized person is called to ministry. The Education for Ministry (EfM) program provides people with the education to carry out that ministry. During the Service of Confirmation we ask God to "Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at Baptism. Send them forth in the power of the Spirit to perform the service you set before them." EfM offers an opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to Christian service.
