Education for Ministry

A Christian education offering.

Meeting of the Education for Ministry group. For more information, contact Adrian Luxmoore at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 264-3502.

About EfM

Every baptized person is called to ministry. The Education for Ministry (EfM) program provides people with the education to carry out that ministry. During the Service of Confirmation we ask God to "Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at Baptism. Send them forth in the power of the Spirit to perform the service you set before them." EfM offers an opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to Christian service.

CANCELED - Adult Forum: Symbols in Christian Art

with Donald Schrader, VMFA Lecturer

From the earliest times Christianity employed the visual arts to convey messages, and visual ‘symbols' have always played a role in religious art. This forum will explore iconography - the meanings of these metaphorical images - in a variety of periods from the hand gestures of early Christian and Byzantine art, to the system of attributes that enables us to identify the saints, as well as the elaborate symbolic world of early Renaissance religion. Special guest Donald Schrader will lead this forum.

Schrader received his MA and PhD degress in art history from the University of Virginia. He has taught Renaissance and 17th Century studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, and the College of William and Mary. He currently teaches Art History at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, and lectures at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Bible Study: The Book of Ezekiel

Explore this book of the Hebrew bible

All are invited to join small group Bible Study this winter. Over 12 weeks, beginning Sunday, Jan. 10, small groups will meet Sunday mornings, 10:15 a.m., in the Norwood Room to study of the Book of Ezekiel.

Ezekiel presents some of the most theologically challenging and dynamic material among the prophetic books of the Hebrew Bible. It wrestles with the problem of the Babylonian exile in a manner not unlike the modern problem of the Shoah or Holocaust: Why did God allow Jerusalem and the Temple to be destroyed, and why did God allow the people of Israel to be carried away into exile? (The Access Bible) Come explore these and other questions about the Book of Ezekiel.

"Forty Days and Forty Nights"... of what? Lent is one of the richest liturgical seasons in the church. During this time, we struggle to acknowledge who (and whose) we are, and work to identify and overcome those influences that prevent us from living into our truest and best selves. Join the Rev. Wallace Adams-Riley and the Rev. Kate Jenkins as we explore various themes in our Lenten readings, practices, and hymnody.
