Dr. Forbes is known as a preacher's preacher because of his extensive preaching career and charismatic style. In 1996, Newsweek magazine recognized him as one of the 12 "most effective preachers" in the English-speaking world. He also has roots in Richmond, having started here as pastor at St. John's United Holy Church (1965-73) and as campus minister for Virginia Union University (1968-70).
